Project Rugby is a joint initiative between Premiership Rugby and Gallagher designed to increase participation in the game by people from traditionally under-represented groups. These include:

  • Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups
  • People from lower socio-economic backgrounds
  • Disabled groups

ENGAGEMENT

The programme currently engages participants aged 14+ (and 16+ for disabled groups) and is delivered by Foundation staff across Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire and Middlesex.

The Foundation provides opportunities for people to participate in the game at a time and place that is easily accessible for them. The objective is to enable participants to progress into community clubs by ensuring channels are in place for them to do so.

KEY OUTCOMES

  • Transition from Project Rugby activities into regular rugby participation
  • Improve individual physical and mental well-being
  • Reduce social misconduct and isolation
  • Challenge existing perceptions of the game, positioning rugby as a sport for anyone regardless of background, ability or gender
  • Use positive role models to act as mentors

I just wanted to say a BIG thank you for the sports sessions that my students had with London Irish Foundation. They really enjoyed the experience of trying different games and being part of a team. Laurisa was great with the students, motivating them to join in, try their best and have fun, which they did! Every single student gave me a very positive feedback about the sessions, how it impacted them and how good they felt afterwards – so well done! Sylwia Richards - Reading College Tutor

B.E.A.T THE STREET

Beat the Street’ is an intervention programme for people affected by homelessness in and around the Borough of Spelthorne.

BEAT the Street not only introduces participants to rugby but runs workshops to help with mental health, addiction and aspects on how to move forward. The idea is to use rugby to get active, but by linking in its core values it highlights in other skills.
