FOUNDATION PARTNER WITH ACTIVE SURREY TO DELIVER THE EASTER FIT & FED PROGRAMME.

The London Irish Foundation once again partnered with Active Surrey to deliver the Easter Fit & Fed 2022 programme.

This holiday camp focused on children who are in receipt of free school meals who may come from disadvantaged families and backgrounds.

Each of the four days during the Easter holidays, participants who attended the Ashford Youth center were fed a hot, healthy meal. A key element of the programme was to give the children an opportunity to get involved with making their own meals.

They initially designed their own pizzas on paper showing some great artistic ideas, followed by them mirroring their thoughts by placing their own toppings onto the pizza base before being cooked.  One of the children said ‘‘I really enjoyed the pizza making and putting our favourite toppings on, I have never done that.’’

The process was repeated by the children on a day they had jacket potatoes.  Throughout the design and cooking adventures they were also taught the difference between proteins and carbohydrates to assist them with their health education.

Alongside the food aspects of the camp, each day consisted of a variety of sports and physical activities during the morning, with the afternoons focused on different Easter based activities.  As an example, all the attendees made Easter bonnets, chocolate cornflake nests, fruit smoothies and the much enjoyed Easter egg hunt to complete the camp.

Thanks to Active Surrey and Odd Box, boxes of fresh fruit and vegetables were given to all of the children and respective parents or guardians on the last day to take home and use in their own recipes.

We are now planning the Summer programme with even more fun activities.
