The Foundation welcome the Royal Navy to Hazelwood

On the 22nd of February 2024, the Foundation welcomed the Royal Navy to Hazelwood to speak to a combination of all our VRU girls from our spring programmes. The girls, all from different schools, were given the opportunity to speak to, ask questions and work alongside members of the Royal Navy Engagement Team. While apprehensive at first our VRU girls gelled as a collective across the two hour session.

The Royal Navy began the day by explaining what their role within the Royal Navy is and how they feel so privileged to work amongst their colleagues and friends all focussed on achieving a collective goal. The girls were in awe of the shear amount of opportunities and career paths the military presented and more specifically the wide range of jobs within the Royal Navy.

The Royal Navy Engagement team shared a number of their experiences and favourite things about their experiences including why they enrolled into the military. The girls were captivated and asked lots of questions about their careers so far. Soon after this discussion the group began the activities.

The Royal Navy challenged the girls to present in a Dragons Den style competition. In mixed groups with girls from a variety of schools, having never worked together the girls were given a building kit with a huge number of moving parts. The girls were challenged to invent a product and present to the Engagement Team about what they had invented, how it worked, their potential profit and reasons behind the products costing.

The girls did not disappoint !

VRU lead James Carne had the following to say regarding the Royal Navy Engagement Team - "I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of my team and the Foundation to thank the Royal Navy Engagement team for their passion and engagement with our spring term VRU participants"
