Just like the England Roses have made a big impact on the game of Rugby Union, the London Irish Foundation has revealed the remarkable impact of its kitshop sales, underlining how sport can play a vital role in tackling environmental challenges and supporting communities.
Through the initiative, the Foundation has saved 1,850kg of CO₂ emissions. To put this into perspective, that’s the same amount of carbon dioxide produced by driving from London to New Delhi — a distance of more than 6,700km. It’s also comparable to charging over 225,000 smartphones or keeping a standard light bulb running continuously for more than 3 years.
The Foundation’s sustainable approach has also saved 9,500 litres of water. That equates to 13 years’ worth of drinking water for a single person, or more than 120 bathtubs filled to the brim. In an era of growing concern about water scarcity, this is a small but powerful step in reducing unnecessary waste.
The kitround programme isn’t just about the planet, it’s also making sure pre-loved sports kit can be given a new life, inspiring more people to take part in sport.
The sales have raised £7,650 for charitable projects, providing access for more than 10 participants in social programmes. That’s enough to fund coaching, mentoring, and development activities that can change the direction of young people’s lives.
On top of that, the Foundation has removed 155kg of sportswear from landfill. That’s equivalent to the weight of an adult male lion or the same as over 1,000 rugby balls. Preventing these textiles from going to waste doesn’t just reduce landfill pressure — it also cuts down on the greenhouse gases generated when fabrics decompose.
Powered by Kitround 360, a platform dedicated to making sportswear more sustainable, this initiative demonstrates how fans’ purchases can contribute directly to measurable outcomes. Every shirt, every piece of kit, and every sale has a ripple effect that stretches far beyond the club shop.
The London Irish Foundation’s work shows that sport can be a force for good, uniting supporters not only around a team but also around a shared vision for a healthier planet and stronger communities. As the Foundation continues its mission, it is proof that small changes — like rethinking how we buy and recycle sportswear — can add up to extraordinary results.
In the words of the Foundation: every purchase is more than just a piece of kit — it’s an investment in people, the planet, and the future.
