Empowering Young Women and Promoting Inclusion: The London Irish Foundation’s VRU Summer Programme & Inclusion Festival
The London Irish Foundation continues to make a profound impact in communities by fostering inclusivity, empowerment, and opportunity for young people. Through two standout initiatives - the VRU Summer Programme and the Inclusion Festival (IDPD) the Foundation has demonstrated its commitment to creating meaningful change. These events provide targeted support to those who need it most, and they serve as compelling opportunities for businesses to contribute to lasting social impact.
VRU Summer Programme: Empowering Young Women
The London Irish Foundation’s VRU Summer Programme was a targeted, 10-day training initiative designed to address the unique challenges faced by young girls in London, particularly amidst rising youth violence and limited access to developmental opportunities. This programme was conceptualised in response to an alarming increase in youth violence, which disproportionately affects vulnerable young girls. These young women often experience exposure to violence, lack strong female role models, and have limited access to essential life skills that could help them navigate their circumstances.
The programme aimed to tackle these issues head-on by creating a safe, supportive environment where these girls could build confidence, acquire practical skills, and develop resilience. Workshops focused on leadership, personal development, and career progression, equipping participants with tangible skills for their future.
A core emphasis of the programme was fostering a diverse and inclusive culture, independent of background or circumstance. The expert-led workshops provided role models who reflected the diversity of the participants, making the training relatable and inspiring. These role models, who hailed from different industries and backgrounds, demonstrated that success is attainable regardless of one’s starting point, thereby fostering a sense of belonging and aspiration among all participants.
Businesses looking to make a tangible difference in their communities can play a crucial role in supporting such initiatives. Sponsoring, supporting or partnering with programmes like the VRU Summer Programme not only enhances corporate social responsibility (CSR) efforts but also contributes to building a more skilled and empowered workforce for the future.
Inclusion Festival: Celebrating Diversity in Sport
For the third consecutive year, Pump Technology Ltd proudly supported the London Irish Community Foundation’s Inclusion (IDPD) Festival, an event designed to bridge the gap between sport and those with disabilities. Held annually in alignment with the International Day of Disabled People (IDPD) on December 3rd, this initiative aims to promote awareness, inclusion, and equal opportunities for people with disabilities.
Since its establishment by the UN in 1992, IDPD has served as a global platform to advocate for the rights, recognition, and integration of disabled individuals into all
aspects of society. The Inclusion Festival is a direct embodiment of these values. With an emphasis on creating a safe and enjoyable environment, the event prioritises “fun” above all else. The goal is to celebrate diversity within the community and reinforce the notion that “sport has no boundaries.”
This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024, at the Braywick Leisure Centre in Maidenhead. Due to overwhelming interest, the morning session reached its capacity of 120 participants, while the afternoon session welcomed an additional 80 participants. The event’s exponential growth, more than doubling in size since its inception in 2022 - underscores the increasing demand for such inclusive opportunities.
Businesses have a unique opportunity to support the Inclusion Festival by sponsoring, supporting, volunteering, or providing resources to enhance the event’s impact. By investing in inclusive community events, businesses not only contribute to social good but also strengthen their reputation as organisations committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Why Businesses Should Get Involved
Both the VRU Summer Programme and the Inclusion Festival offer unparalleled opportunities for businesses to engage in meaningful community initiatives. Supporting these programmes aligns with key CSR goals, enhances brand reputation, and fosters goodwill within the local community. Potential benefits for businesses include:
- Enhanced Brand Image: Demonstrating corporate responsibility and commitment to social impact.
- Employee Engagement: Encouraging staff participation in community events fosters team spirit and purpose-driven work.
- Networking Opportunities: Building relationships with like-minded businesses, organisations, and community leaders.
- Positive Social Change: Contributing to empowering young women and promoting inclusion in sports.
This year, 10 young women and girls attended both events, participating actively and experiencing first-hand the impact of these initiatives. Their involvement not only highlighted the effectiveness of these programmes but also served as a testament to their potential for future growth and expansion.
We invite businesses to join us in making a difference. Key Features:
- Targeted Skill-Building Activities: The programme featured structured activities such as team-building exercises, hospitality training, media presentation workshops, financial literacy sessions, and creative arts. Each activity was meticulously designed to close specific skills gaps while fostering a sense of empowerment and belonging among the participants.
- Expert-Led Workshops: The involvement of industry experts, such as renowned chefs Stephane Delourme, and Paul Bates, and musicians Emmanuel Smith and Ronan MacManus, provided the girls with hands-on experience and mentoring. This engagement not only made the training practical but also served as an inspirational experience, leaving a lasting impact on the participants.
- Integration with Broader Strategies: The programme was aligned with the Violence Reduction Unit’s (VRU) broader strategies under the Mayor of London’s Office.
