The tackling Health programme, which is funded by Greggs Foundation, started in Septemeber 2019 and has already seen 330 children over a 5-week period. The programme provides children with the opportunity to play tag rugby and learn about healthy eating. The children have been developing their skills ready for the tag rugby tournament in July 2020 through a mix of invasion games and skill development.
During the classroom sessions, the children have been learning about healthy eating. They look at what a balanced diet is, how to achieve a healthy lifestyle and how to create a healthy meal. They have also been creating meals for London Irish players and find out why it is important for the London Irish players to have a balanced diet.
The programme has proved popular with the current schools, with one teacher saying "they are excited that someone from a professional club is teaching them and that has helped them to engage".
Green Dragon School in Brentford were the winners of the London Irish Foundation 'Players of the Week' having shown great enthusiasm and understanding throughout their weeks of tackling health.
The London Irish Foundation has another 12 schools to see in this academic year and we are looking forward to working with them.
