B.E.A.T the Street: Boosting Mental and Physical Wellbeing Through Sport

During Mental Health Awareness Week, the London Irish Foundation is highlighting the transformative impact of its “B.E.A.T the Street” programme, an initiative supporting individuals affected by homelessness by focusing on mental and physical health through the power of sport.

Homelessness often goes hand in hand with poor mental health, trauma, and physical decline. “B.E.A.T the Street” creates a structured, welcoming environment where participants can reconnect with their wellbeing, regain confidence, and rebuild their lives.

“Before this, I didn’t care about anything. I felt invisible. Now I look forward to training, I’ve made mates again, and I’ve started thinking about what comes next.”
Louis Stone, participant & Ambassador of the Foundation

At the heart of the programme are regular rugby sessions that promote fitness, teamwork, and discipline, providing a powerful outlet for stress relief and emotional expression. Alongside this, participants engage in wellbeing workshops that focus on:

  • Managing mental health challenges and emotional resilience
  • Understanding addiction and accessing recovery pathways
  • Building self-esteem and social connection through shared goals

Physical activity improves strength, stamina, and overall health and becomes a catalyst for emotional growth and a renewed sense of purpose.

The Foundation supports individuals as they work toward personal goals, whether it’s improving their health, reconnecting with their community, or taking steps toward employment or volunteering.

“Physical activity is a proven tool for improving mental health. With B.E.A.T the Street, we see the change not just on the pitch, but in people’s lives.”
Rhys Mynott, Inclusion Officer, London Irish Foundation

As we mark Mental Health Awareness Week, the Foundation celebrates the strength and progress of every participant who’s taken a step toward a healthier, more hopeful future.
