Prostate Cancer Awareness Month - PSA Testing

London Irish Foundation and Pump Technology Ltd held their first PSA testing event at Hazelwood, Sunbury-on-Thames on Saturday the 30th of November 2024, during November's Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

The PSA test, a simple blood test, helps detect early signs of prostate cancer. Men aged 40+ were encouraged to attend, having been informed of the benefits, limitations, and risks. Elevated PSA levels may indicate prostate issues but not always cancer. Key statistics highlight the complexity of PSA results: only 1 in 3 men with raised PSA have cancer, while 15% with "normal" levels may also have it.

The event aimed to promote awareness and provide free PSA testing for early detection, underscoring the importance of regular screening. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, and early detection significantly improves outcomes.

The London Irish Foundation and Pump Technology Ltd partnership reflects a shared commitment to community health and education. Attendees also received guidance on the next steps if PSA levels were elevated, emphasising informed decision-making about further testing or treatment.

Key insights include:

  • 15% of men with "normal" PSA levels may still have cancer.
  • 1 in 3 men with raised PSA has cancer; 2 out of 3 do not.
  • Biopsies miss prostate cancer in 20% of cases.

The PSA testing event empowered men over 40 to make informed health decisions, emphasising awareness and early detection.

Andy Keast, London Irish Foundation Chief Executive, stated, “We had just under 70 attendees at Hazelwood on Saturday. We sincerely thank Pump Technology Ltd for supporting this inaugural Prostate Cancer Awareness event in our community. We look forward to offering this opportunity to many more in the future.”
